Journalists cleared to cover security operations- Defence Minister, Musa

By, Omowumi Hannah, Ibadan

The Federal Government has announced plans to allow journalists and selected media practitioners to accompany troops during military operations in conflict areas as part of efforts to improve public understanding of security operations.

The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, disclosed that the initiative would provide media professionals with direct access to the realities faced by security personnel while carrying out their duties.

According to the minister, the move is aimed at giving Nigerians a clearer picture of military engagements, including the challenges, risks and sacrifices involved in defending the nation.

He explained that modern security challenges require stronger cooperation between government institutions, the media, private sector and citizens, stressing the importance of a well-informed public in supporting national security efforts.

The idea of embedding journalists with military units has previously been discussed as a way of strengthening civil-military relations and promoting more balanced reporting of security operations. Supporters of the approach argue that firsthand exposure can help journalists better understand operational realities and reduce misinformation.

The development comes amid ongoing efforts by authorities to improve communication around Nigeria’s fight against insecurity and build greater trust between the armed forces and the public.
