2027: Abia PDP, APC chief condemn Otti over attack on journalist

Abia-Governor-Alex-Otti
Abia State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted to the exchange of words between Governor Alex Otti and the Group News Editor of Don FM Umuahia, Mr Chika Nwabueze, during the governor’s media chat on Friday.

Nwabueze had asked the governor to provide verifiable data showing how his administration’s policies had directly improved the standard of living of residents of Abia State, amid growing concerns over transparency and inclusive governance.

In response, the governor was alleged to have described the question as “irresponsible” and “stupid,” a reaction that has since sparked widespread public debate.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Abraham Amah, the PDP expressed concern over the comments attributed to Otti, which allegedly insulted Nwabueze for asking a legitimate and professional question regarding the data and measurable outcomes of government policies as they affect the lives of ordinary people.

The PDP chairman argued that it was the constitutional role of the media to ask questions on behalf of the people, stating that there was nothing wrong with the question the governor was asked.

The party called for respect for the freedom of the press, while urging him to respond to public inquiries about verifiable data for the purpose of accountability.

But responding to the matter, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, said: “The Don FM journalist should have measured the verifiable impact of Otti’s performance with the rehabilitated Ohokobo-Afara Road in Umuahia,” which, according to him, leads to Nwabueze’s residence.

Also, a governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Prince Paul Ikonne, has criticised Otti over what he described as an unbecoming and “dictatorial” outburst against a journalist during a recent media interaction.

Ikonne, therefore, demanded an immediate and unreserved public apology to the journalist, whom he said acted professionally and in line with democratic norms.
