The National Association of Oduduwa Students, NAOS, has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and other labour bodies to prioritize engaging stakeholders in the oil sector rather than making vague statements on crude data assessment.

In a statement by NAOS President, Comrade Benedict Olalere Adetunji, the Association acknowledged the concerns of Nigerian workers and households about rising fuel prices but noted that the Dangote Refinery has significantly reduced the country’s dependence on imported refined products over the last two years.

NAOS lauded the refinery’s capacity, saying it represents a crucial investment in domestic refining and energy security. “The facility has become an important source of refined petroleum products for Nigerian markets, reducing the country’s historical dependence on imported refined products,” it said.

The student body cautioned labour bodies against statements that could undermine the viability of domestic refining capacity. “Defending Nigerian consumers should not mean weakening Nigerian industries. Nigeria needs a downstream petroleum sector where local refineries can thrive, consumers access competitive prices, workers enjoy decent livelihoods, investors operate with confidence, and regulators protect the public interest,” it added.

However, NAOS emphasized the need for accountability in the Dangote Refinery and the downstream sector, advocating for fair prices and reliable supply in the national interest.
