Hon. Olufemi Onireti has defended his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a deliberate step driven by conviction and alignment with the policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Onireti said his decision came after careful reflection following his party’s defeat, noting that political realities often require timely and strategic choices. According to him, the move was not impulsive but the outcome of consultations with his political base and supporters.

Highlighting the fluid nature of politics, he stressed that decisions such as defection are not unusual, particularly as the country gradually prepares for another election cycle in 2027.

While he remains undecided about contesting in the next general elections, the former PDP chieftain said he would make his intentions known at the appropriate time.

Addressing concerns raised by opposition voices, Onireti maintained that Nigeria’s political landscape has witnessed similar shifts in the past, including during the PDP’s years in power. He urged stakeholders to respect democratic processes and called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remain steadfast in upholding the rule of law.

The APC member expressed strong confidence in the current administration, stating that ongoing policies under President Tinubu are positioning the country on the path of progress. He described the present moment as crucial for national development and commended the government’s efforts to tackle pressing challenges.

Reaffirming his political stance, Onireti pledged to actively support the re-election bid of President Tinubu, as well as the success of all APC candidates in the forthcoming elections.
