A distinguished poet, writer, cultural advocate and respected community leader from Saki, Oyo State, Chief Alabi Ogundepo has died at the age of 84.

The family announced his passing in a statement issued by Dupe Ogundepo- Falana on Sunday, describing it as a profound loss to the literary and cultural community in Yorubaland and beyond.

Chief Ogundepo who was born in Saki was widely celebrated for poetry and writings that captured the depth of Yoruba culture, tradition, language, history and the human experience.

The statement noted that through the deceased creative works and public engagements, he played a significant role in the preservation and promotion of Yoruba heritage.

Beyond literature, the late elder was regarded as a man of dignity, wisdom and compassion. He was known for his counsel, intellectual contributions and commitment to community development.

“He touched the lives of many through his friendship and his words often inspired reflection and appreciation of our shared heritage.

The family expressed gratitude to individuals, institutions, traditional rulers, literary bodies, friends and well-wishers who have sent condolences.

While mourning the loss of “a beloved father, husband, grandfather, relative and friend,” the family said it was comforted by the legacy he left behind through his writings, values and service to society.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course. The family has requested privacy and prayers at this time.

“Chief Alabi Ogundepo may have departed this world, but his voice, his poetry and the memories he created will continue to live on,” the statement concluded
