ASUU-FG Agreement, Struggle for Public Education Reform-ERC Deputy Co-ord, Ogunjinmi

By, Olawale Ogunbusola

The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) has welcomed the newly signed agreement between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government of Nigeria, describing it as a product of years of resolute struggle against attacks on public education.

In a statement made available to newsmen by
Deputy National Co-ordinator of the organization Ogunjimi Isaac, on Tuesday, noted that the agreement which includes a 40% pay rise for lecturers, incorporation of Earned Emolument Allowance (EEA) as a monthly salary component, and Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) for teaching and research tools; however, is inadequate to reverse the decay in public university education and calls for full implementation and renegotiation after three years.

ERC warned that the government’s history of disregarding agreements with ASUU raises concerns about implementation, citing the delayed release of Needs Assessment Funds and partial implementation of previous agreements.

The organization urged ASUU members to remain vigilant and continue pushing for proper funding and democratization of decision-making in public institutions.

“We reiterate our call for a united struggle of ASUU, SSANU, NASU, NAAT, and Students’ Unions for adequately funded and democratically managed public university education,” Ogunjimi said.
