The National Association of Oduduwa Students has described the election victory of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, as a clear demonstration of the fundamental truth about democracy.

In a statement signed by National President, Benedict Olalere Adetunji, and made available to newsmen on Sunday, the group noted that the victory showed the confidence Osun people had in choosing their preferred candidate for leadership despite intimidation.

“Despite the tension surrounding the election, the people of Osun came out to exercise their constitutional right to vote,” it said.

The group maintained that the victory further demonstrated that political power belongs to the people, not to political structures, government institutions, or individuals who believe that having access to federal authority gives them the power to dictate the destiny of a state.

The group urged political parties to embrace peace, orderliness, and unity, while violence and intimidation should be discouraged in the bid to take over governance in the country.

“Political disagreement must never become a licence for violence. Let political parties understand that losing an election is not the end of political relevance, while winning is not a licence for arrogance,” it added.

Meanwhile, the student body called for an independent review of reported pre-election violence in Osun, and for due punishment under the law for those found culpable.
