Bayelsa gets new deputy governor as assembly backs Akpe

By Paul Dada

Akpe previously served as Majority Leader in the State House of Assembly before his appointment as Chief of Staff at Government House.

Governor Douye Diri has put forward Pastor (Hon) Peter Pereotubo Akpe, his Chief of Staff, for the position of Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State.

Lawmakers in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly endorsed the nomination on Tuesday, bringing to a close weeks of uncertainty over the replacement for the late Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who died on 11 December 2025.

Akpe previously served as Majority Leader in the State House of Assembly before his appointment as Chief of Staff at Government House.

He is from Ebedebiri in Sagbama Local Government Area, the same council area as his predecessor.
