The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a restructuring of police tactical units across the country.

This is aimed at addressing concerns over their operations and manpower drain on police divisions.

In a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday, the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, clarified that a recent report claiming Disu disbanded all police units was “a misrepresentation” of the IGP’s directives.

The statement noted that IGP Disu has directed that tactical teams at Zonal and State Command levels be reduced to a maximum of five, and at Area Command and Divisional levels to a maximum of three, by merging or disbanding teams.

The move excludes state government-created outfits like Lagos’ Rapid Response Squad and Oyo’s SRS.l, stressing that the goal is to free personnel for police stations and reduce complaints about tactical team excesses.

Recall, the IGP had pledged accountability and a people-friendly force in his maiden address, saying the restructuring would enhance supervision and remove causes of complaints against the Force.
