The electrocution tragedy took place on 7th April, 2026 at 5.05am lasting two hours uncontrollably leaving one dead, many tragically injured at Dakun Community, Apata Yakuba off Kwara Polytechnic Road in Ilorin.

Eyewitnesses described the incident “fatally tragical”, adding that the electrocution occurred due to a high voltage from a live high tension wire that snapped on low tension wires within the community, highlighting the casualties, including a recently passed out corps member, Ismail Olatunbosun with his sister, Yetunde were badly injured with several property lost within the affected community, owing to high voltage.

Speaking with newsmen, Principal Partner, Utilities Consumers Rights Advocacy Initiative of Nigeria, Mr. Shadrack Akinbodunse described the incident a sort of negligence on the part of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.

He believed the wire rating was too low compare to the energy it carried and no accident relay to its switch-off, saying the officials on duty should be sanctioned for such an incident that lasted several hours.

Mr. Akinbodunse who called residents to remain vigilant and careful in handling electrical appliances while on source, insisted the affected communities should be compensated as a matter of urgency, while justice be meted out to the DISCO staff on duty for public trust.

” The damage is fatally costly. I saw human begins burned and drained even in his house peacefully. What a gruesome incident caused by NERC and DISCO officials negligence. The Law of Electricity frowns at this. Where it happens, speedy investigations and compensations are next prescriptions.”, he said.

Recall, the family of Ismail Olatubosun, who died in the shocking electrocution incident on April 7, 2026, has been calling for a thorough investigation and compensation for the victims.

According to the deceased’s neighbour Mr. Obey , two live High Tension wires snapped around 5:05 a.m., bridging low tension wires causing an uncontrollable voltage that led to Ismail’s death and injuries to his sister, Yetunde.

The family said the incident also damaged electrical equipment across the Dakun community.

“We demand answers and justice for Ismail and his family,” said a community representative. The pain and trauma inflicted on them must be addressed.”

The family seeks compensation for Ismail’s death, Yetunde’s injuries, and community damages while pains, languishes, bitterness and damages remain uncounted, the family, other human rights advocates have been urged to step into the situation against pervasion of judgment and due compensations to all affected residents.
