Army Orders Probe as NANS Alleges Misconduct by Soldiers in Osogbo

By, Our Reporter

The Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, has ordered an investigation into allegations of misconduct levelled against some of its personnel by the National Association of Nigerian Students, Southwest Zone D.

In a statement signed by its Army Public Relations Officer, Major Yahaya Ibrahim, on Tuesday, the Depot said any conduct that falls short of the Army’s mandate to protect citizens was “unacceptable.”

“The Nigerian Army exists to protect all citizens, especially the youth, who are the future of the nation. No student or law-abiding citizen should ever feel unsafe or be subjected to harassment, intimidation or assault by those entrusted with the security of lives and property.”

The Commandant of the Depot said the probe was in line with military regulations and the values of the Nigerian Army.

The statement urged the NANS Southwest Co-ordinator, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, to make available all evidence and witness statements to enable a thorough investigation.

“The Depot Nigerian Army Osogbo remains committed to ensuring that its personnel are held to the highest standards at all times. The alleged actions of the personnel do not reflect the training and character development of recruits at the Depot.”, Major Ibrahim noted.

The Army gave a firm assurance that any personnel found culpable would “face the full weight of military law.”

It also said the Commandant was ready to meet with NANS leadership “at the earliest convenience to agree on the way forward.”

Recall, NANS Southwest Zone D had earlier issued a press release alleging misconduct by some soldiers in Osogbo.
