The Oyo State Gubernatorial Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Barr. Hazeem Gbolarumi, has donated the sum of N500,000 to residents of Mellanby Hall, University of Ibadan, describing it as a “token of impact” to his alma mata.

The UI Law alumnus made the presentation during an unscheduled visit to the university on Friday.

Speaking at the event, Barr. Gbolarumi commended the leadership of the university under the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, for sustaining the institution’s leading position in Nigeria and Africa.

He said the institution had greatly impacted his life and expressed gratitude for passing through its rigorous but rewarding academic process.

The PDP gubernatorial candidate, who lived in Mellanby Hall as an undergraduate, said the hall remains dear to his heart. He urged residents to remain dedicated, committed, and contributory to community development.

“This used to be my hall of residence during my undergraduate years. Serenity, commitment and community development were key themes for us then. I urge you students to maintain the status quo,” he said.

While presenting the donation, Barr. Gbolarumi vowed to continue supporting the hall.
“Well, this is a token of love and appreciation for the impact of this Hall of Residence on me, and all of us. It may be little, but I promise more empowerment in the nearest future,” he said.

In their separate remarks, the President of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Government, Temitayo Adeboye, represented by Mellanby Hall Student’s Representative, Emmanuel Oladokun; the Warden of Mellanby Hall, Dr. Abiola; and Hall Chairman, Simon Unai, commended the alumnus for the visit, describing it as a source of relief and motivation to residents.

Barr. Gbolarumi also attended a special prayer held at the UI Central Mosque for peace and progress of Oyo State and Nigeria. He donated a substantial sum to the Muslim community in the university and urged continued religious tolerance for peaceful coexistence in the state.
