The National Association of Oduduwa Students, NAOS, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to uphold professionalism and ensure its operations are not perceived as politically motivated, particularly in the reported investigation involving the Oyo State Government.

In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Olalere Benedict Adetunji, and made available to newsmen in Ibadan on Thursday, NAOS said while anti-corruption institutions are critical to Nigeria’s democratic development, their credibility depends on impartiality, transparency and strict adherence to the rule of law.

“The association questions the timing and approach of the reported investigation involving the Oyo State Government. While no public institution should be immune from lawful scrutiny, investigations must be guided solely by credible evidence and due process, not by political considerations or public perception,” the statement read.

NAOS noted that Oyo State has recorded significant investments in infrastructure, prompt payment of workers’ salaries, educational development, healthcare delivery and other public welfare initiatives in recent years, which have been acknowledged by residents and observers.

“Consequently, any investigation involving the state should be carried out with fairness, transparency, and professionalism to avoid undermining public confidence in governance,” it added.

The student body expressed concern over what it described as repeated allegations of selective enforcement against the EFCC over the years.

“Such perceptions, whether justified or not, weaken public trust in one of Nigeria’s foremost anti-corruption institutions. The Commission must therefore ensure that its operations are free from political influence and are applied equally to all public office holders, irrespective of political affiliation,” NAOS stated.

The association further urged the EFCC to strengthen public accountability by regularly communicating the outcomes of major investigations and prosecutions.

“Nigerians deserve to see measurable results in the fight against corruption rather than actions that generate controversy without clear judicial conclusions,” the statement said.

NAOS also called on the Commission to give equal attention to allegations of financial misconduct and fraudulent schemes across the country, “regardless of the personalities or states involved.”

“We reiterate that our position is not an opposition to anti-corruption efforts. Rather, we advocate for an EFCC that commands the confidence of all Nigerians through professionalism, independence, and unwavering respect for constitutional principles.

“Nigeria deserves institutions that inspire trust, not suspicion. The EFCC must continue to strengthen its integrity by ensuring that justice is administered without fear, favour, or political interference,” the statement concluded.
