Student Body Warns FG Against Policies That may Threaten Religious Freedom

The National Association of Oduduwa Students, NAOS, has raised alarm over reported moves to restrict Christian evangelism, open-air preaching, and the free practice of the Christian faith in Nigeria.

In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Olalere Benedict Adetunji, and released on Sunday, NAOS expressed “deep concern” over growing public discussions suggesting attempts to limit religious expression.

The association said Nigeria practises constitutional democracy founded on justice, equality, and religious freedom, stressing that every Nigerian has the right to worship and preach without fear or discrimination.

“Any policy or action that appears to target one religious group while allowing others unrestricted freedom has the potential to create unnecessary tension and threaten the peace and unity of our nation,” the statement read.

NAOS warned that the Federal Government must exercise extreme caution in handling religious matters, noting that policies perceived as suppressing religious freedom could deepen distrust and fuel avoidable crises.

The student body argued that government should focus on pressing national issues instead of actions that could divide citizens along religious lines.

“Today, Nigerians are battling unprecedented economic hardship. Inflation continues to erode purchasing power, unemployment remains high, insecurity persists across many parts of the country, and citizens struggle daily to survive. These are the urgent challenges that demand the government’s full attention,” it said.

NAOS also urged religious leaders and Nigerians to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and committed to national unity, saying the country’s diversity should remain a source of strength, not division
